movie recs sought

So, I recently got a Netflix account. Um, any favorite movies you think I should see? Don't assume I've seen stuff, as I really haven't been to the movies in quite a while.

So far, I've seen Water, Fire (Earth is in the queue), and Perfect Creature (vampire flick with Dougray Scott, yummm). I've got the following in the queue besides Earth: Stardust, the latest Harry Potter, La Vie En Rose, Notes on a Scandal, The Lives of Others, Talk to Her, Crash, Next, 8 1/2, Across the Universe, Things to do Before You're 30 (Dougray Scott again, and Billie Piper), and Anchoress, Existenz, and some Inspector Morse (all for Chris Eccleston).

Well, I would only be making poorly informed guesses about your tastes, but I am building a list of movies I loved that mostly no one else has seen or cares about:

Joe Vs. The Volcano -- meaning of life stuff in a light fluffy package. I have been known to snap judge people by whether they loved or hated the movie. comedy/fairy tale

The Shipping News -- Incredibly overlooked for awards, imo. The story of a loser who finds himself. Newfoundland, supernatural, Judi Densch and advice on writing. I loved it. drama/supernatural

The Yakuza -- older movie about an American who was in the occupying force in Japan and finds out the ripples of trouble he caused by living with a Japanese woman at the time. drama/more drama

Shirley Valentine -- story of a Liverpool housewife who finds herself by making a trip to Greece. (These "finding yourself" themes show up on my lists often) I know how uninteresting that summary sounds, but, truly, it's not. comedy/drama

Is Joe vs. the Volcano that early Tom Hanks one? If yes, I adored it, too, though it's been quite a while since I've seen it.

Thanks for the recs on the others! They all sound good.
