So, I recently got a Netflix account. Um, any favorite movies you think I should see? Don't assume I've seen stuff, as I really haven't been to the movies in quite a while.

So far, I've seen Water, Fire (Earth is in the queue), and Perfect Creature (vampire flick with Dougray Scott, yummm). I've got the following in the queue besides Earth: Stardust, the latest Harry Potter, La Vie En Rose, Notes on a Scandal, The Lives of Others, Talk to Her, Crash, Next, 8 1/2, Across the Universe, Things to do Before You're 30 (Dougray Scott again, and Billie Piper), and Anchoress, Existenz, and some Inspector Morse (all for Chris Eccleston).

Have you seen Secretary? Heck, even if you had, it's SO worth seeing again. Mmmm, James Spader. :D

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is worth it just for the lush scenery and the glorious storyline. Mmmm, requited but forbidden love. :D

I wish I had Netflix. I want to see Jade something fierce. I have such a crush on David Caruso.

oh yes! LOVED Secretary, on many levels. The hot chocolate trance induction was my favorite part. *s* And I loved Tiger/Dragon, so yeah, we're on the same wavelength for sure. What is Jade?

Jade is, according to my friend who has seen it, a "better Basic Instinct."

It's a movie about a cop (played by the inimitable David Caruso) who is after a "kinky call girl" (played by Linda Fiorntino, who I loved in Dogma). It was made back in the 90s, when Caruso left NYPD Blue. I haven't seen it, but after hearing my friend describe it, I'm all a-twitter to see it. Though, of course, the oddness of seeing Caruso all *young* compared to how he is now (I like older men!) will be interesting. (To say nothing of seeing him in *sex scenes!*)

Oh! And other movie recs-- did you see "House of Flying Daggers?" It was similar to Tiger/Dragon, and I really enjoyed it as well.

Mirrormask

Shortbus (you may hate it, but I think it's kind of amazing, and definitely worth seeing)

oooh, I saw that production of Swan Lake when it was on Broadway... twice. It was one (two) of the most intense cultural events of my LIFE. Given that, I'll definitely look up the others you've mentioned. :) Thanks!

Stuff we've rented lately

Stardust was a lot of fun.
An Inconvenient Truth. Made us think.
The Kingdom. Lots of guns and explosions but definitely has a message.

cool, Stardust is arriving today. :) Also, I enjoyed the book. Inconvenient Truth -- yeah, need to get to that sometime. What's The Kingdom about?

Thanks for the recs!

The Kingdom is set if Saudi Arabia when there is a terrorist attack on a US compound.
Jamie Fox leads a FBI investigation team to check it out.
I don't know how accurate the history stuff is, but the parts I checked were on.

Night Watch, and Day Watch (not sure if the second is on DVD yet). Russian vampire good-vs-evil flicks. Beautifully made.

I'll try to think of more :)

Sweeney Todd. But that's not out yet. But OMG BEST MOVIE EVAR.

ooh, vampire stuff! *squee*
I have mixed feelings about seeing Sweeney Todd -- having seen the musical, and really, really loving Sondheim. Not sure I want to see it reinterpreted as a movie. But I'll probably get to it eventually.

Thanks for the recs! Definitely check out Perfect Creature if you like vampire stuff -- this one is a little different than the usual story, more sci fi. The vampires are a result of a genetic advance, and live to serve humans as a kind of protective church. Spooky.

Sweetheart - it's JOHNNY DEPP, sounding a lot like David Bowie... YUM.

If that's your thing, of course ;)

And I'll have to check out Perfect Creature. Night/Day Watch (they're good books, too, and there's a third book, Twilight Watch) are also very different.

I just reviewed my Netflix history, and thought of some more :)

The Hudsucker Proxy.
City of Lost Children
Farewell my Concubine
Amilie
Night at the Museum was actually kinda sweet.
Black Snake Moan - wasn't as kinky as it looked, but was much more touching.
Paris is Burning - great docu about the drag culture in NYC and the origin of "Voguing"
Howl's moving castle
ConstantineTipping the Velvet - it's a short-run TV or miniseries, but sweet and gay.
Big Night
The Pillow Book
The House of Yes

Enjoy!

Constantine and Tipping the Velvet should be on separate lines...heh.

hey, thanks for this! lots to check out. I adored Black Snake Moan, actually -- it hit exactly my kink, which is more of the emotional part of D/s -- he took control, temporarilly, of her life, in order to help her heal. That big ass chains were involved was the cherry on top, so to speak. Having it NOT be sexual actually made a lot of sense to what their connection was about. I also loved that he handed her over to her boyfriend, with that little symbolic chain.

If Big Night is the Italian restaurant one, then I saw that one, too, but none of the others. Cool! stuff to explore!

Well, I would only be making poorly informed guesses about your tastes, but I am building a list of movies I loved that mostly no one else has seen or cares about:

Joe Vs. The Volcano -- meaning of life stuff in a light fluffy package. I have been known to snap judge people by whether they loved or hated the movie. comedy/fairy tale

The Shipping News -- Incredibly overlooked for awards, imo. The story of a loser who finds himself. Newfoundland, supernatural, Judi Densch and advice on writing. I loved it. drama/supernatural

The Yakuza -- older movie about an American who was in the occupying force in Japan and finds out the ripples of trouble he caused by living with a Japanese woman at the time. drama/more drama

Shirley Valentine -- story of a Liverpool housewife who finds herself by making a trip to Greece. (These "finding yourself" themes show up on my lists often) I know how uninteresting that summary sounds, but, truly, it's not. comedy/drama

Is Joe vs. the Volcano that early Tom Hanks one? If yes, I adored it, too, though it's been quite a while since I've seen it.

Thanks for the recs on the others! They all sound good.
