devohoneybee: (methos what?)

personal ads

Mostly, they suck. I mean, not even remotely arousing (so to speak) any interest. Too conventional, too bland, lacking any sort of imaginative spark, or possessing some passion that is an automatic rule-out -- conservative politics, evangelical religion, or, as one potential listed as a non-negotiable requirement, "must play tennis."

Last week, however, two ads caught my eye. Both were men in a suitable age range, with some thoughtfulness to their descriptions, companionable politics, a welcome bent for asthetic and cultural pursuits, even a bit of humour and wit. One clearly focused on his interest in spirituality, which is fairly important for me in a match. He described his involvement in yoga, meditation, and prayer, highlighting his desire for a match with similar focus on inner meaning. He listed his age as 56. I'm 49. Good, good, looking good.... till we get to the end. He would like to meet a woman aged 25 to 36. Yeah, real spiritual.

The second had details that are no longer memorable but also sounded promising at the time. Again, until the end. He specified a match who is "blonde and at least 5'6" tall.

Okay............

It's really disgusting, isn't it? You're reading along and then they turn out to be just as shallow as the next ad over, just better read. Or they're really clever and snarky and it's looking quite promising in a McShep kind of way -- and then they send along their photo and it's 'OMG, no. Sorry, but hygeine is kind of important....' Or they bill themselves as the Shep to your Mc (or the MacLeod to your Pierson), and it turns out that they're just the other way and you're both throwing lemons at each other by the previews.

It's enough to hie me to a nunnery.

Have fandom relationships spoiled us for real dating? *g*
