'subaru' is actually Japanese for the Pleiades.

No way! Really? That is so cool. I love the Pleides and I've been driving around with them on the grill of my car. :-)

When I bought the car, the dealer didn't say that "subaru" meant that, but that yes, the emblem represents the Pleides because the company originated with 7 smaller companies coming together. "But," I pointed out, "there are only 6 stars."

"The 7th is hiding behind the big one," he replied, with a gleeful little smile. :)

And, in fact, one of the "seven sisters" is a binary star or something, and is usually not seen with the naked eye. I heard a story once that the ancient Greek army used the ability to see the seventh star as an eyesight test.

(Or was it the double star in the big dipper? ::scratches head::)
