Does anyone know anything about where to send a hard drive for data retrieval, and how much it costs? The tech guy who looked at mine said he couldn't read the data on my drive but it was all there. Meep.

ETA: of the links supplied by Kady Mae (thanks, KM!), the first one (drivesavers) sounded good but charges $500 to $2700, and advises that most of their jobs are in the upper third of that cost estimate. The next 3 *didn't return my phone messages* which were left friday, possibly late depending on the time zones they are in, but it is now after 12 noon Pacific time, and still no return call. The last, nationwidedatarecovery, actually costs 475, not $399 once you add a "parts fee" and a shipping fee -- fair enough. The guy sounded like he had a reasonable understanding of what is what. My feeling is, if I had the money to spend, I'd go with drivesavers for a higher chance of a good result, but I'm going to go with the lower cost one as drivesavers is just out of reach. And yes, I will be doing more frequent back ups in the future. *groans*

For hard drive data recovery from a pro place, you start at about $500.

There's

www.drivesavers.com/

http://www.harddriverecovery.org/

http://www.dataleach.com/

http://www.stellarinfo.com/

But what I reccomend first is mounting the drive as the slave drive in another computer and then going to www.grc.com and buying a program called Spin Rite (about $70) and giving that a try. If the drive will even mount and spin up, Spin Rite will *probably* be able to salvage a fair portion of your data and/or repair the drive to the extent that you might even get more use out of it.

There's also

http://www.nationwidedatarecovery.com

They start at $99 but can go as high as $400 if they have to open the drive and reconstruct it.

Thanks so much for the info! You rock. I'm checking into the sites. I called the guy who has my drive now and he's taking a look at the Spin Rite site to see if it is comparable to the programs he used to try to access it. He suspects physical damage, but was able to determine that the data is *there*. *keeping fingers crossed*
