elemental musings -- surely someone knows something about this

It occured to me, as I was reflecting idly on The Librarians and the Excaliber story, that the legend of the Sword in the Stone may have been a carryover from a much older story about smithing.  Who but the Smith can take stone, extract iron ore from it, and forge it into a mighty weapon?

Am I right?
