need recs for book club

It's my turn to choose a book for my book club, and I thought I would go with a fantasy or sci fic novel. Bear in mind this is not a genre-reading group for the most part. What sci fi or fantasy novel would you recommend to introduce someone to those genres?

So far I have been thinking of The Riddlemaster series (McKillip), Solis by A.A. Attanasio, Cuckoo's Egg by CJ Cherryh, or Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I also like the idea of an urban fantasy novel like War for the Oaks, but worry that's a bit dated.
