So, I'm *mumble mumble* *cough* putting together a manuscript for a book of poems. To, um, self-publish.
And the first round of it is done -- I've got over a hundred poems, sequenced into 5 sections. I did some editing as I converted them, one at a time, from emails to WORD files. But it's very hard to see them clearly.
I've decided to go the self-pub route, because I've heard how ridiculously hard it is to get a book of poems published, and my work isn't particularly commercial, and I just want them out there. But I want this to be a good piece of work, and I don't know if I can tell, on my own.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to edit something like this? Who to go to, how to frame the questions, how to know what to listen to? How do you evaluate a book of poems?
When (if) you've purchased books of poetry -- how did you decided if you liked what you held in your hand? What does it need to be saying -- in the words, the layout, the structure -- to make you want to listen?
Hope my questions make sense. Discuss, please?
